Submit to Industrial Estate

Publishing writing from the working class, Industrial Estate is a new print literary journal from Subbed In.

Industrial Estate is open for submissions of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Submissions close Wednesday 14 Februrary 2024 at 11:59pm AEDT.

Edited (and self-funded) by Victoria Manifold and Dan Hogan, the project seeks to enhance working class participation in the literary arts by providing publication opportunities to working class writers and writers from a working class background.

Upper class writers are overrepresented in ‘Australian’ publishing, both on the page and behind the scenes. As it stands, there are very few arts organisations in so-called Australia with a mandate to specifically account for the inclusion of working class writers. While imperfect, the UK has been doing a much better job on this front due to the work of its Social Mobility Commission.

In your submission to Industrial Estate you will be asked three questions that are considered the 'gold standard' by the experts of the UK's Social Mobility Commission for measuring socio-economic diversity. While not perfect, and noting there is no Australian equivalent, we have adopted the commission's questions and tailored them to suit the Australian context for the purpose of managing submissions to Industrial Estate. If you are unsure whether you are working-class or from a working-class background, we recommend submitting anyway.

We strongly encourage submissions from First Nations people, trans and non-binary people, people with disability, and people of colour.

Industrial Estate is open to submissions from anywhere in the world. Please note payment for published works by writers outside of ‘Australia’ will be made via PayPal.

Each issue will publish 4-8 writers.

While we love writing about working class experiences, Industrial Estate would like to emphasise that it is not at all a requirement to submit work that involves your experience of being working class or working class issues. Industrial Estate is an unthemed literary journal open to interpretations of what constitutes 'literary' and accepts submissions of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.

Like Subbed In, Industrial Estate is not beholden to a funding body, university, or any other entity. Industrial Estate is a DIY experiment whose existence is contingent on interest and sales and as such we do not have a publishing schedule. We’re making it up as we go along.

Any profits from sales of the first 50 copies of Industrial Estate Issue 1 will be donated to Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN).
